Crumb-Topped Donuts Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Donuts:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Crumb Topping:

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt

For the Glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tbsp milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of flour, granulated sugar, yeast, and salt.
    • In a small saucepan, heat the milk and water until warm (about 110°F). Add the warm milk mixture and melted butter to the dry ingredients. Mix well.
    • Add the egg and beat until smooth. Gradually stir in the remaining flour to make a soft dough.
    • Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 5-7 minutes.
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  2. Prepare the Crumb Topping:
    • In a medium bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, melted butter, cinnamon, and salt. Mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside.
  3. Shape and Fry the Donuts:
    • Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness.
    • Cut out donuts using a donut cutter or a large round cutter and a small one for the center.
    • Place the donuts on a lightly floured surface and let them rise for another 30 minutes until puffed.
    • Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F. Carefully add donuts to the hot oil, a few at a time, and fry until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  4. Prepare the Glaze:
    • In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  5. Assemble the Donuts:
    • While the donuts are still warm, dip the tops into the glaze and then into the crumb topping. Let the glaze set before serving.

Enjoy your delicious homemade crumb-topped donuts!
