Fluffy Golden Biscuits Recipe

 

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk, cold
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar until well combined.
  3. Cut in the Butter: Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.
  4. Add Buttermilk: Make a well in the center of the dry mixture and pour in the cold buttermilk. Stir gently with a wooden spoon or spatula until the dough just comes together. Be careful not to overmix.
  5. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently knead the dough a few times until it holds together. Pat the dough into a rectangle about 1/2-inch thick.
  6. Fold and Roll: Fold the dough in half and gently roll it out into another 1/2-inch thick rectangle. Repeat this folding and rolling process 2-3 times. This helps create flaky layers.
  7. Cut Out Biscuits: Using a round biscuit cutter, cut out the biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Press the cutter straight down without twisting to ensure the biscuits rise evenly. Gather any scraps, gently re-roll, and cut out more biscuits.
  8. Apply Egg Wash: Brush the tops of the biscuits with the beaten egg to give them a beautiful golden color when baked.
  9. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and fluffy.
  10. Serve: Remove the biscuits from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack. Serve warm with butter, jam, or your favorite toppings.
