German Chocolate Cake Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Cake:

  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 4 oz German sweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs, separated
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups cake flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk

For the Coconut-Pecan Frosting:

  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Cake:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
    • Pour boiling water over the chopped German sweet chocolate, stirring until melted. Let it cool.
    • In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla and the cooled chocolate.
    • In a separate bowl, sift together the cake flour, baking soda, and salt. Add the flour mixture to the chocolate mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
    • In another bowl, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Gently fold the egg whites into the batter.
    • Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then remove to wire racks to cool completely.
  2. Prepare the Coconut-Pecan Frosting:
    • In a saucepan, combine evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, and butter. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened and golden brown, about 12 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla, coconut, and pecans. Cool until thick enough to spread.
  3. Assemble the Cake:
    • Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a third of the frosting over the top. Repeat with the second and third layers, spreading frosting over the top and sides of the cake.
  4. Serve:
    • Garnish the top with additional pecan halves, if desired. Slice and enjoy this rich and decadent German Chocolate Cake!

This cake is a classic dessert that is sure to impress with its moist chocolate layers and irresistible coconut-pecan frosting.
