Crispy Fried Chicken Drumsticks

Ingredients:

  • 12 chicken drumsticks
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons hot sauce (optional for spice)
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for extra heat)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Oil for frying (vegetable, canola, or peanut)

Instructions:

  1. Marinate the Chicken:
    • In a large bowl, mix the buttermilk with the hot sauce, salt, and pepper.
    • Add the chicken drumsticks, ensuring they are fully submerged in the buttermilk mixture.
    • Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for best results. This process helps tenderize the meat and infuses it with flavor.
  2. Prepare the Flour Mixture:
    • In another large bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Dredge the Chicken:
    • Remove the chicken from the buttermilk and let excess drip off.
    • Dredge each drumstick in the flour mixture until well coated. For extra crispiness, dip the floured drumsticks back into the buttermilk and then into the flour again.
  4. Fry the Chicken:
    • Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). You need enough oil to cover the drumsticks.
    • Fry the drumsticks in batches to avoid crowding, which can lower the oil temperature and lead to less crispy chicken.
    • Cook each batch for about 12-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown and cooked through. The internal temperature should reach 165°F (74°C).
  5. Drain and Serve:
    • Use a slotted spoon to remove the drumsticks from the oil and drain on paper towels.
    • Serve hot with your choice of dipping sauces or sides like coleslaw or potato salad.

Tips:

  • Marinating Time: The longer the chicken marinates in the buttermilk, the more flavorful and tender it will be.
  • Maintaining Oil Temperature: Keep an eye on your oil temperature to ensure it stays around 350°F (175°C) for the best results.
  • Safety First: Always be cautious when working with hot oil to prevent splashes and burns.

These crispy fried chicken drumsticks are a crowd-pleaser, perfect for gatherings, picnics, or a comforting family dinner. Enjoy your cooking and the delicious results!
