Homemade Buttermilk Biscuits

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon of baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 6 tablespoons of unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
  • 3/4 cup of buttermilk, cold

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 450°F (230°C). Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper or lightly greasing it.
  2. Prepare the Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Use a whisk to ensure the ingredients are evenly distributed.
  3. Incorporate the Butter: Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients in the bowl. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. The butter should be evenly distributed, with some pea-sized pieces remaining.
  4. Add the Buttermilk: Create a well in the center of the flour mixture. Pour the cold buttermilk into the well. Using a spatula or wooden spoon, gently stir the mixture until the dough just begins to come together. Avoid overmixing; the dough should be slightly shaggy.
  5. Form the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Pat it down into a rectangle that’s about 1/2 inch thick.
  6. Cut Out the Biscuits: Using a floured biscuit cutter or a sharp knife, cut out individual biscuits from the dough. Press straight down without twisting the cutter to ensure proper rising. Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one.
  7. Gather and Re-Shape: Gather any remaining dough scraps and gently pat them together. Cut out more biscuits until all the dough is used.
  8. Optional Brushing: For a golden finish, you can brush the tops of the biscuits with a little extra buttermilk before baking.
  9. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake the biscuits for 10-12 minutes, or until they are tall and golden brown on top.
  10. Serve: Remove the biscuits from the oven and serve them warm. They’re delicious on their own or with toppings like butter, jam, honey, or gravy.

Enjoy your homemade buttermilk biscuits as a delightful addition to any meal or as a tasty snack!
