Cheesy Baked Cabbage Steaks

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme (or herb of your choice)
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.
  2. Prepare the Cabbage:
    • Remove any outer leaves from the cabbage and trim the stem end. Slice the cabbage into 1-inch thick rounds, making “steaks.”
  3. Season the Cabbage:
    • Place the cabbage steaks on the prepared baking sheet. Brush both sides of each steak with olive oil and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Bake the Cabbage:
    • Bake the cabbage steaks in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through, or until tender and slightly caramelized around the edges.
  5. Prepare the Cheese Mixture:
    • In a small bowl, mix together the shredded mozzarella cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, dried thyme, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  6. Top the Cabbage Steaks:
    • Remove the cabbage steaks from the oven and sprinkle the cheese mixture evenly over the top of each steak.
  7. Bake Again:
    • Return the baking sheet to the oven and bake for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Serve:
    • Carefully transfer the cheesy baked cabbage steaks to a serving platter or individual plates.
    • Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired.
    • Serve hot as a delicious and unique side dish.
