1. Preheat the Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

2. Prepare the Cake Batter:

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • In a large bowl, beat the butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then mix in the vanilla extract.
  • Add the flour mixture in three parts, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.

3. Bake the Cake:

  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
  • Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

4. Prepare the Caramel Sauce:

  • In a medium saucepan, melt the sugar over medium heat, stirring constantly until it turns a deep amber color.
  • Carefully add the heavy cream (the mixture will bubble up), and stir until smooth.
  • Remove from heat and stir in the butter, vanilla extract, and salt. Let the caramel sauce cool to room temperature.
