Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Add the apple pie filling to the baking dish. Stir in the cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla, then spread the apples evenly across the bottom.
- Drizzle about 1/2 cup of caramel sauce over the apple filling.
- Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the apples. Do not stir the cake mix into the filling.
- Slowly pour the melted butter across the entire surface, covering as much of the dry cake mix as possible.
- Sprinkle the chopped pecans and additional cinnamon over the top.
- Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the apple filling is bubbling around the edges and the topping is golden brown and crisp.
- Remove from the oven and let the dump cake rest for about 10–15 minutes. Drizzle additional caramel sauce generously over the warm cake before serving.
Tips for the Best Dump Cake
Spread the cake mix in an even layer so it bakes consistently. When adding the melted butter, distribute it across the entire surface rather than pouring it into one spot.
For extra apple flavor, add one peeled and finely diced fresh apple to the canned filling.
